Washington Square Park was first used as a military parade ground in 1826, soon afterwards becoming a public family park. Visitors can see the Greek Revival mansions built by mid-19th century wealthy families along the park's northern edge. Within the park are several famous sculptures, including the 77-foot high marble Washington Arch, built in the 1890s to mimic the Arc de Triomphe, a flagpole from World War I and a large central fountain. The park is located among the buildings utilized by New York University in Greenwich Village.

Nearby crepe stand, skateboarders, drugs, big arch, chess players—you name it, Washington Square Park has got it! Oh yeah, and the occasional rally. The village was at the heart of many a political cause in its day, and though it has lost some of its lackluster (I’m looking at you NYUers), you can still kick it democratically.
