Protecting a forest of coastal redwoods, some of the last left in the world, Muir Woods National Monument offers rare sights of this dense, lush wilderness. With miles of trails connecting the monument to Mt. Tamalpais State Park, there is plenty of room for scenic hikes, outdoor exercise and nature viewing. This monument was the first privately donated land to become a national monument, offered up by Congressman William Kent and declared as such in 1908. It sits just a few miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, about 15 miles north of San Francisco.
