Used as a winter residence for American industrialist James Deering from 1916 until his death in 1925, the building and lands that now make up the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens are a testament to the vast luxury and opulence in which such wealthy turn-of-the-century businessmen lived. Designed, decorated and furnished in the style of an Italian Renaissance villa, the historic building has been restored to its original beauty and the surrounding gardens carefully cultivated to a state of lush abundance. Visitors can take a guided tour of the building or stroll the home and grounds individually, and the museum's cafe is a wonderful way to revel in the elegance of the home and grounds over a light meal. Overlooking the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserve about a mile south of downtown, the grounds are close to the Miami Science Museum.
