Bruce and Linda had their very first date here; a very picturesque inauguration into any Seattle relationship. Nowadays it’s a bit more difficult to set sail the ship of love from atop the Space Needle, mostly because the elevator ride to the top will cost you about as much as your entire meal.
Let’s start with the obvious. The quintessential Seattle landmark since its construction in 1962, the Space Needle is probably the only thing folks back home will think of when you tell them about your new digs. You can pay $16 to go to the top, or you can walk around Seattle Center for free and snap pictures of this googie gem. Just don’t try to capture one of you holding it up or you’ll just look like a tourist.
Buses: 3, 4, 5, 8, 16, 26, 28, 30, 82, 358; also, the monorail.
Immediately recognizable to any fan of the TV show Frazier, Seattle’s Space Needle is a leftover from the 1962 World’s Fair. There is a “safety grid” around the observation platform and only one person has managed to successfully jump since its installation. Let’s have no more talk of ending relationships atop Seattle landmarks.

Your voyage into the realm of ultimate Seattleite will be over upon completing one of the following two Space Needle-themed tasks; 1) you must collect a minimum of 20 different Space Needle snow globes, or 2) acquire a tattoo of the monument a minimum of 10 inches in height, and in a place that will be exposed to the public eye for at least one season every year.
At some point, every Seattlite (even the acrophobic ones) must venture to the top of the Space Needle. I remember my first time like it was yesterday. The pristine 360 degree city view, the almost overwhelming spirit of the Northwest, and the very painful memory of having my wallet raped for $16 to ride an elevator to the top of a tower. Just try not to forget that the fun is in the journey, not the gift shop.
