The Gibbes Museum of Art was first founded in 1905 by art-enthusiast William Shoolbred Gibbes, and has been one of the city's premiere art museums ever since. Featuring art of regional significance, the museum has prominent collections of colonial art, art from the early 20th century Charleston Renaissance and contemporary works. In addition to its 10,000-piece collection, the museum hosts temporary exhibits that range from art by Otto Neumann, a German Expressionist, to sculptures by French artist Auguste Rodin, the sculptor of the famous piece "The Thinker". The museum is located just south of the Confederate Museum in Historic Downtown Charleston, within walking distance of Waterfront Park.
