Founded in 1773 and opened to the public in 1824, the Charleston Museum is considered by many to be the first museum established in the United States. This historic place of knowledge displays period clothing, furniture, firearms and silver from the early settlements of the South Carolina Lowcountry to the 19th century. Youngsters should not miss the "Kidstory" exhibition which allows children the opportunity to experience life in colonial Charleston. For an additional fee, visitors can also tour two historic Charleston homes, the Heyward-Washington House and the Joseph Manigault House.
