Just think about it: one minute you’re taking in a magnificent view of Manhattan, the next you’re flying like Superman, except without a cape and the actual ability to fly.

Standing at 102 stories tall, The Empire State Building is the 2nd tallest skyscraper in America and the 9th tallest skyscraper in the World.

The project began on January 22, 1930 and only took 410 days to completely build. The Empire State Building officially opened on May 1, 1931, when President Herbert Hoover turned on the building’s lights from Washington, D.C.

The construction of the Empire State Building was part of a competition in New York for the title of the world’s tallest building. The project involved 3,400 workers, mostly immigrants from Europe. According to official accounts, five workers died during the construction.

Maybe it’s just me, but I think a trip to the top of the Empire State Building is quite worth the lines and money. It sits in the middle of town, and thus, you get a good view of compact Manhattan in all directions, with all those annoying people only showing up as ants and taxis appearing noiseless.

The ESB is included in the American Society of Civil Engineers’ “Seven Wonders of the Modern World” list and is also a National Historic Landmark. See, others are impressed too!
