The Lower East Side Tenement Museum is contained within an actual six-floor tenement building that housed over 7,000 immigrants between the years of 1863 and 1935. A number of guided tours take visitors through the histories of actual families that lived in the tenement, which now serves as a museum. It features displays and artifacts that explore the history of the city through the eyes of the impoverished immigrant. The building is located on the Lower East Side, just north of Chinatown.
