The Kekaha Kai State Park features a series of freshwater spring pools, as well as two beautiful beaches that are great for swimming and some water sports. The walk to the beach cuts through a large lava field thought to have been formed when the goddess Pele, angry at the village's selfishness, unleashed a flow of lava that destroyed the inhabitants. The park is located north of Kona International Airport, near the Mahaiula area of the island.
