Five distinct islands comprise Channel Islands National Park, where the miles of sea that separate these specks of land from the mainland keep the park quiet and secluded for nature lovers to enjoy. Thousands of years ago, these islands were home to tribes of humans who have left their marks behind for dedicated archaeologists to uncover. The United States military has also held various bases and outposts on the islands, though all but one have now been abandoned. For the most part, these islands are simply almost untouched wildernesses, with abundant room for hiking, fishing, wildlife watching, whale spotting and more. While the visitors centers are accessible by car, being located in Santa Barbara and Ventura, the islands can only be reached by boat or plane. Private companies offer both transportation options, but private boat travel is also allowed.
