Of the two plantations that comprise Cane River Creole National Historical Park, the Oakland Plantation is more accessible to the general public than the Magnolia Plantation. Built by slaves starting in 1821, this plantation's French Colonial-styled buildings were home to the Prud'homme family and included not only the expansive main house but also a variety of outbuildings like a store, a carpenter's shop and the overseer's house. Visitors can pick up a map of the plantation and wander amongst the historic structures on a self-run tour or make it for the daily ranger-guided tour of the grounds. Situated along the Cane River about 9 miles southeast of Natchitoches, with the Magnolia Plantation portion of the park located about 10 miles farther down the road.
